Day 5 (May 31, '08): Today we left the Sea of Galilee to go to Jerusalem. Our first stop was Bet She'an National Park, the location of Roman and Canaanite ruins. Especially interesting were "Palladius Street," an ancient street lined on each side with columns, and the bathhouse, one of the best preserved Roman bathhouses in existance. Then we made a quick visit to Ma'ayan Harod National Park, the place where God told Gideon to take his troops down to the water to be "sifted" (in Judges 7:1). It was beautiful, shady, and the water felt fantastic on my feet and ankles (STILL swollen from the flight, but getting better). We then started the drive to Jerusalem along the eastern side of Israel - we were able to see Jordan as we drove. This is where Israel started to look less like San Diego and more like the Middle East, like I had expected - the temp was much hotter as well. After lunch (Falafel again) we stopped at Wadi Kelt, the place where Elijah fled to hide from Ahab and Jezebel. The view here, of the landscape and the St. George's Monastery, was incredible. There were some Bedouin boys there who threw a scarf over the girls' heads and hoisted us onto their donkeys, even after we had refused ("It's free, it's free!"...haha :) yeah right). So I got my $2 picture on the donkey...fun times! Now I'm in the hotel in Jerusalem, it is much nicer than the one in Tiberias, and I have internet access for the first time. I'm a little sunburned, but it was a good day...now I'm off to the pool.
